Assignment
Through "active reading" and "active listening," explore, connect and develop your own understandings of the ideas engaged in the lecture and reading. This is exploratory "sketch" writing to develop your thinking for your own purposes. Weekly sketch writing is graded on quality of effort according to a 4 point rubric. While quality of thinking is directly connected with the quality of writing, this will not be graded on grammar, spelling, or other writing conventions. You may wish to follow the PIQCE guidelines:
Paraphrase: Capture the essence of a compelling idea in your own words. Directly quote short passages only, and only when the manner of its articulation is a significant feature of the idea.
Ignore: Be selective in working only with ideas that are most relevant to you or the larger discussion. Be aware that this comes with some risk that others find great significance in the idea or aspect of the presentation that you chose to ignore.
Question: If you do not understand something, ask a question. If you see a potential hole in the argument or idea, ask a question. If there are possible points for further consideration, ask a question.
Connect: Draw connections between the different points within a reading or lecture, or with ideas from your other classes or life experiences.
Extend: Speculate on where these ideas might lead, or how they might connect to your studio work, or how they might have implications for the larger world.

4 Excellent (100%): thorough and thoughtful engagement with key points drawn from both lecture and reading, questioning, connecting and extending into the larger world of personal and collective life experience or life experiences.
3 (75%) Good
2 (50%) Fair
1 (25%) Poor
0 (0%) Unacceptable
